To use trees on a farm is called “agro-forestry”.
In a region like the Khajuraho region, where the sun is beating mercilessly, trees are already necessary to provide shadow to the vegetable crops. But the trees themselves also produce fruits, nuts, fodder and timber. This method is still extant in some of the small traditional farms of Bundelkhand. And when one looks closer to these farms, it appears that they are less prone to drought, and that the water level in the wells is higher than in the surrounding areas.
In Rani Bagh, we research which of the local trees are suited for agro-forestery.
