An important feature of sustainable agriculture is seed autonomy: farmers produce their own seed, from the cultivated crops, often varieties adapted to the local climate. In other words, they are not dependent on the large seed multinationals (e.g. Monsanto).
A network of already 50 farms are the basis of our community seed bank, with local varieties of dal (lentil), onion, eggplant, rice, barley. This network is constantly expanded to a proposed maximum of 100 regional farms.
The system is simple: a farmer gets a certain amount of seed for free on condition that he returns the same amount of seed (plus one fourth) after harvest.
The seed bank is situated in Rani Bagh. A “Seed Shop” is organized in Pateriya ka Bagh.
